from the link on the page you’d think? after negotiating the design and printing and whatnot you’s think that was the easy bit. bbut, sadly, no. i don’t know quite why paypal is being quite so annoying (i strongly suspect end user problems!) but still, after three weeks, even allowing for personal laziness, i still can’t get it to work.

finally arrives from the printers after much to-ing and fro-ing by us. we still need to get an online ordering system figured out – i really don’t know how to do that paypal thing as yet but sometime soon…

but the final product looks great and we’re really happy with it. it’s been great to see the whole thing from start to finish even if, at times, the design part was finicky and sorting the money out was a pain. doing the print thing was our favourite – seeing the print machines, smelling the ink, that was something we weren’t expecting.

it isn’t cheap tho and it does make you wonder just how publishers and booksellers manage when their products are priced so low. perhaps that’s a mystery that will reveal itself in due course! that said, it’s been great fun and we can’t wait to take what we’ve learned with this project into whatever we do with the next one. so if you’ve ever mulled over the idea of making your own book – definitely, definitely do it. it’s totally worth it!

after a longer than planned hiatus.

why so? a bit like that thing you do when you move into your first house and you want to decorate all the rooms at once. sounds good, yes, but not the best plan and certainly not the thing you want to be about if you have other things you want to be doing.

but, in the interim, distances finally moves into view and should be back from the printers next week. updates on what we’ll be doing with that will be on that page as we make up our minds. what was great was (aside form getting the money together) was being in the printers, seeing the machines, smelling the ink. we’re confident the wait will have been worth it and can’t wait to see the finished article.

these are straitened times however and no mistake. we’re lucky to be able to produce a book like distances but the simple fact of the matter is that the finished item won’t be cheap even keeping our margins to a minimum. what to do then? dip a toe into the world of kindle.

ebooks aren’t my favourite mode of reading but they don’t take up much in the way of space, are eminently portable and, in the case of slp0004, we wanted to make something that would be about the same price as a cup of coffee. so, a lazarus should be out some time around tomorrow.

will the formatting work? have i mastered anything regarding html? tomorrow will tell! it would be nice if we can make an actual physical version of this (and strawberries) but it’s unclear at the moment whether time will allow. watch this space.

what next? we’ll make up our minds when these next things settle. very much watch this space!

is all ready to go except that making the buttons work in adobe to turn the pages is killing us. and that’s assuming the upload to wordpress goes smoothly. failing that we may go down the issuu route.

all the photos are done, the rough layout is complete (in spite of our nascent adobe skills). a couple of more tweaks and twonks, figuring out how to get it up on wordpress and all will be done. at last!

as previous, all the text work for slp002 is done. all we’re doing now is waiting for the photography. and waiting. and waiting. he doesn’t write. he doesn’t call. to all intents and purposes has gone awol.

we were kind of looking forward to all that so alternative plans are being made. keep your eyes peeled.

the good news is that we’re back from holiday and slp002 has had all its (small but perfectly formed) text aligned and sorted. all we’re waiting for now is some photography, the hope that our adobe skills are equal to the task and the finished product will be up reasonably soon.

other news – slp has long had the notion to ‘sponsor’ some sort of cycling activity. in this case it’s going to be a participant in the strathpuffer 24hr mountain bike race (or idiots as they’re commonly called). so far there are no firm ideas in place but so far it sounds like some sort of image/textile/soundthing with a bit of classic literature thrown in for good measure. should anyone be interested in participating email at the usual address or wait and see when the page goes up

collaborative actions that have crossed the slp radar recently include -

empty rooms - a collaboration between milla van der have and wei fangfu. i’d tell you more but i don’t know anything more. it looks good tho – check it out.

fox gospel - poetry and illustration by rafael torrubia and tessa asquith-lamb. slp admits a soft spot for this kick ass exhibition. if you’re around edinburgh the next few days don;t be missing it. will a print copy be forthcoming? we hope so.
